Review: Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers

Published April 3rd, 2013
Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
385 pages (Hardcover)

Sybella arrives at the convent’s doorstep half mad with grief and despair. Those that serve Death are only too happy to offer her refuge—but at a price. The convent views Sybella, naturally skilled in the arts of both death and seduction, as one of their most dangerous weapons. But those assassin's skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to a life that nearly drove her mad. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of Death himself, He must give her a reason to live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for? (From Goodreads)

I love this book!  I LOVE THIS BOOK!

I love the setting.  15th century Brittany is a nice change for someone who doesn't usually do historical.  The writing is that strong!  I mean, my knowledge of 15th century Brittany is pretty much non-existent, but I was instantly drawn in and embracing it!  I felt like I was there!  The conflict is awesome.  I loved the battle and the strategy and alliances and twists and turns!

I love the characters!  Sybella is a badass who's been through some serious shit.  She has some suicidal tendencies, and it was a joy to see her progression!  Then there is Beast, who is a f**king beast!  Again, badassery.  In Samantha's world, this instantly meant *swoon*!  The character development was amazing.  Every single character has depth and complexity that comes out through the story.

I love the plot!  Dark Triumph starts part way through the events of Grave Mercy (check out my review here), and explains what Sybella was up to during the first book.  Sybella's progression in dealing with her past while battling the political turmoil of the novel intertwined beautifully.  I also like that this book highlights more of a personal side to the series.  Grave Mercy focused more on the politics and history, but this time round we see more romance and personal relationships.  Robin LaFevers actually addresses this in an Author's Note at the end of the novel.  I'm glad that she does, because it was what I was thinking the whole time!  Dark Triumph was a perfect balance.

Dark Triumph is amazing and gorgeous and spectacular.  It will draw you in and tear your soul apart!  So, you know, go buy this book immediately!

"Waiting On" Fangirl

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating!

This week I am excited for...
Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .
But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?
And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind? (From Goodreads)
I LIKE HOW THIS SOUNDS!  A good ol' coming-of-age story with undertones that many can relate to, Fangirl is bound to be a hit!  I'm not saying I've ever been a serious fangirl, but I can get a little attached to my characters.  I cannot wait to read Fangirl, which hits shelves September 10th, 2013.

Review: Pivot Point by Kasie West

Published February 12th, 2012
HarperTeen
343 pages (Hardcover)

Knowing the outcome doesn’t always make a choice easier . . .

Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through . . . and who she can’t live without. (From Goodreads)

The question here is what took me so long to read this?

I was skeptical at first.  My hatred of flashbacks is well documented, and while Pivot Point does not contain flashbacks, the strange POV had me seriously worried.  It's a single perspective that alternates between what I'm going to call two different realities.  It's strange, but original and very well done.

The characters were fantastic.  It was really cool to see how the different scenarios dictated how Addie developed.  Then there are Trevor and Duke that are similar but oh-so different.  I liked seeing the different relationships, and how Addie changed with each.

And there was a love-triangle type thing that I didn't hate!  Me like!  I want to say that there was a moment between Addie and Trevor that actually made my heart flutter.  I wanted more Trevor the whole way, but even Duke gave me some swoon moments.  I call this madness!

Overall, I just loved Pivot Point.  It had it's slow moments, but was an original read with a crazy ending that has left me desperate for more.  Jump on this book now, and you will not be disappointed!

Review: Star Cursed by Jessica Spotswood

Published June 18th, 2013
Putnam Juvenile
384 pages (Hardcover)

With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate's friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.

Cate doesn't want to be a weapon, and she doesn't want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood's schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she'll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.

In the highly anticipated sequel to Born Wicked
, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess's quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England.  (From Goodreads)

OH MY GOD I HAVE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE MY LOVE/PAIN RIGHT NOW !!

Born Wicked was one of my favourite books of last year, and Star Cursed didn't let me down!  I enjoyed ever single page of this book, minus the last couple, and that was only because my heart was ripped into a million little pieces.

Set in the late 1890's, Star Cursed continues on the world of witches in New England that Born Wicked created.  The world-building here is fantastic.  I was drawn in from the first page.  The idea that there are witches posing as students at a convent and religion extremist brothers felt real, as if it were actually happening around me.

The characters are simply fantastic.  I cannot complain about a single one of them or the development that occurs.  Cate is still one of the strongest protagonists out there.  Finn was probably my favourite to follow through the story, as he strays far away from his simple book-loving-gardener roots.  I also stand by what I said in my review of Born Wicked.  He is a refreshing change in a love interest, and isn't your typical panty-dropping-hott guy, but rather a quiet and reserved guy with glasses.  I LOVE IT!

Jessica Spotswood also makes a great character that you want to hate so badly but cannot, also known as Maura.  If you don't feel for her, I don't know what to say to you.

The plot here is crazy engaging.  I don't know how many times I've said it here, but this book draws you in from start to finish.  If the politics and women-hating aspects of this society don't piss you off, the ending definitely will.  I don't mean that in a bad way.  It was a fantastic ending, but in an incredibly torturous way.  But back to the politics, there is such a deep message ingrained in here about equality, fate and the power in each of us that does not go missed.  This book isn't just fluff.  Star Cursed has layers and depth that move the reader.

With fantastic characters, awesome world-building and an ending that will leave you reeling, I cannot recommend Star Cursed enough!  This is by far one of the most underrated series out there!

"Waiting On" Crown of Midnight

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating!

This week I am excited for...
An assassin’s loyalties are always in doubt.
But her heart never wavers.

After a year of hard labor in the Salt Mines of Endovier, eighteen-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien has won the king's contest to become the new royal assassin. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown – a secret she hides from even her most intimate confidantes.

Keeping up the deadly charade—while pretending to do the king's bidding—will test her in frightening new ways, especially when she's given a task that could jeopardize everything she's come to care for. And there are far more dangerous forces gathering on the horizon -- forces that threaten to destroy her entire world, and will surely force Celaena to make a choice.
Where do the assassin’s loyalties lie, and who is she most willing to fight for? (From Goodreads)
Okay, I want to talk about this for a second, and direct you to my review of Throne of Glass.  Apparently I liked it, but I honestly don't remember why I liked it.  Either I've changed a lot over the past year, or I really liked it and forgot what it was about.  Assassins and Choal.  That is seriously all I remember.

This is why I am excited to read Crown of Midnight: what was it that I liked and do I still like it.  Crown of Midnight is out next week, on August 27th, 2013.  I've seen a lot of positive reviews, and a lot of people saying that this book outdid it's predecessor, so I'm thinking it is time for a reread of Throne of Glass!

And I am sorry, but I hate these new covers.  If I weren't so curious, I would never buy this.  That's just my personal opinion.

Review: Golden by Jessi Kirby

Published May 14th, 2013
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
278 pages (Hardcover)

Seventeen-year-old Parker Frost has never taken the road less traveled. Valedictorian and quintessential good girl, she’s about to graduate high school without ever having kissed her crush or broken the rules. So when fate drops a clue in her lap—one that might be the key to unraveling a town mystery—she decides to take a chance.

Julianna Farnetti and Shane Cruz are remembered as the golden couple of Summit Lakes High—perfect in every way, meant to be together forever. But Julianna’s journal tells a different story—one of doubts about Shane and a forbidden romance with an older, artistic guy. These are the secrets that were swept away with her the night that Shane’s jeep plunged into an icy river, leaving behind a grieving town and no bodies to bury.
Reading Julianna’s journal gives Parker the courage to start to really live—and it also gives her reasons to question what really happened the night of the accident. Armed with clues from the past, Parker enlists the help of her best friend, Kat, and Trevor, her longtime crush, to track down some leads. The mystery ends up taking Parker places that she never could have imagined. And she soon finds that taking the road less traveled makes all the difference. (From Goodreads)

First, the cover and overall design of this book is stunning.  STUNNING.

With a deep message and beautiful writing, Golden has all the makings of a great read.  Unfortunately, a little something was missing for me.

Overall, Golden is beautifully written.  There is a poetic quality that is fitting with the Robert Frost references.  The message is beautiful too.  There is something magical about taking a risk and shaping your own destiny.  It left me with this sense of wonder about my own past and what I could have done differently.  It made me reflect on myself (which is something I'm not good at).

Parker and I had some similarities.  I've always been one known as the smart one.  School was always important, and my parents strict about grades.  This instant connect got me into the book from the start.  I don't think everyone will be able to relate, but Parker is a character that is very "likable".  I can't think of anything about any of the characters that would turn anyone away from this story.  The characters are solid and drive the strong plot.

So, the beginning and ending were great.  The problem for me came around the middle of the book.  Golden lacked that wow-factor that really draws the reader in.  The middle of the book slowed down, and didn't leave me excited, or really interested, in what would happen on the next page.  I found myself only reading a few pages before putting it down.  The last few chapters picked up and drew me back in, but it took a long time to get there.

I feel like anyone who likes contemporary will really enjoy Golden.  The writing really is beautiful and deep.  What this book lacked was that *oomf* that makes me not want to set a book down.

Y'all know I'm a huge fan of anything by Jennifer L. Armentrout, so I couldn't resist participating in the cover reveal for TRUST IN ME!  This companion novel follows the events of WAIT FOR YOU (plus some new material that I am dying for!) from Cam's perspective.

It’s Wait for You as you’ve never seen it. Trust in Me lets you in on Cam’s side of the #1 New York Times Bestselling story.

"Waiting On" All Our Yesterdays

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating!

This week I am excited for...
"You have to kill him." Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.

Only Em can complete the final instruction. She’s tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present—imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside.

Marina has loved her best friend James since the day he moved next door when they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America’s most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James’s life crumbles apart, and with it, Marina’s hopes for their future. Now someone is trying to kill him. Marina will protect James, no matter what. Even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it. At least not as the girl she once was.

All Our Yesterdays is a wrenching, brilliantly plotted story of fierce love, unthinkable sacrifice, and the infinite implications of our every choice. (From Goodreads)
I'm not sure how I feel yet.  Time travel books and I typically don't get along, but this sounds so good and I've heard such good things!  Maybe All Our Yesterdays will be the one to change this for me?  We'll find out after the September 3rd, 2013 release!  Also, fantastic cover!

Top Ten Tuesday: In "X" Setting

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the wonderful ladies over at
The Broke And The Bookish!

This Week's Topic:
Top Ten Books With "X" Setting

I found this topic difficult!  I read books with such diverse settings that it was hard to develop any unifying theme.  Setting really can make or break a story.  Setting can transport you anywhere, which may be why I like my books to be all over the place.  I definitely get a lot of wanderlust and books can either fuel or help manage that.

Here is that wanderlust issue I mentioned.  I love to travel, but haven't had many opportunities.  I love books that are set in foreign places, and Europe is a big one.  Whether it be France, the U.K or Prague, I would love to be transported there!

Books Mentioned:
Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers (goodreads)
Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor (review/goodreads)
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins (goodreads)
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith (review/goodreads)
Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare (review/goodreads)

I wouldn't say that high school is my favourite setting (I couldn't wait to get out of there!), but a lot of the books I read are dealing with this phase of life.  And let's be honest for a minute, it is a pretty turbulent time in anyone's life.  There are stories there, so why not read about them and be a little more grateful for how you're high school years went...

Books Mentioned:
Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry (review/goodreads)
Perfect by Ellen Hopkins (goodreads)
The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead (review/goodreads)
Fire With Fire by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian (review/goodreads)
Private by Kate Brian (goodreads)

Review: Fire With Fire by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian

Published August 13th, 2013
Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers
528 pages (Hardcover)

Lillia, Kat, and Mary had the perfect plan. Work together in secret to take down the people who wronged them. But things didn’t exactly go the way they’d hoped at the Homecoming Dance.

Not even close.

For now, it looks like they got away with it. All they have to do is move on and pick up the pieces, forget there ever was a pact. But it’s not easy, not when Reeve is still a total jerk and Rennie’s meaner than she ever was before.

And then there’s sweet little Mary…she knows there’s something seriously wrong with her. If she can’t control her anger, she’s sure that someone will get hurt even worse than Reeve was. Mary understands now that it’s not just that Reeve bullied her—it’s that he made her love him.

Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, burn for a burn. A broken heart for a broken heart. The girls are up to the task. They’ll make Reeve fall in love with Lillia and then they will crush him. It’s the only way he’ll learn.
It seems once a fire is lit, the only thing you can do is let it burn... (From Goodreads)

A copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  This did not influence my opinions in any way.

Holy amaze-balls.  This book was SO GOOD!

Fire With Fire continues where Burn For Burn left off (you can see my review here) with the character recovering from the events of homecoming.  While they followed through with their original plan, more revenge plots are brewed and the group continues to take it out on one of the original victims.

I love how there isn't a love triangle, but rather a crazy mess involving everyone (aka what happens in small communities).  This could suck, but it's woven together so well that I would be upset, followed by intensely hopefully, and then heartbroken.  I enjoyed every second.

Mary, Lillia and Kat are still fantastic characters.  The alternating POV is done very well.  We're also given a little more back-story on each character, and get to see each develop and grow.  The characters are definitely a strong point in this series.  I loved getting some of my questions about Mary answered, only to end up with even more!  Like I said last time, I think everyone will fall for at least one of the girls.

The ending is killer.  Literally.  I sat in bed with my jaw on the floor for the last 30-ish pages and I am not even exaggerating here.  Then I sat in bed dumbfounded.  The ending is THAT GOOD.  The whole book is like this though, drawing you in and refusing to let go.  The storylines are woven so well that every little detail has the potential to mean something much more significant!

Fans of Burn For Burn should pick up Fire With Fire immediately, and any fan of contemporary should get started on this series!  Hell, I would recommend this to anyone at all!

A to Z Survey

I love me a good survey.  I kind of used to be a survey fiend on Xanga, MySpace, and even Facebook.  I think I've done a couple on my Tumblr too!  There is something so fun about them, so when I saw that Jamie from The Perpetual Page-Turner had created an old-school survey, I had to jump on this bandwagon!

Review: If I Should Die by Amy Plum

Published May 7th, 2013
HarperTeen
405 pages (Hardcover)

I will not lose another person I love. I will not let history repeat itself.

Vincent waited lifetimes to find me, but in an instant our future together was shattered. He was betrayed by someone we both called a friend, and I lost him. Now our enemy is determined to rule over France’s immortals, and willing to wage a war to get what they want.

It shouldn’t be possible, none of it should be, but this is my reality. I know Vincent is somewhere out there, I know he’s not completely gone, and I will do anything to save him.
After what we’ve already fought to achieve, a life without Vincent is unimaginable. He once swore to avoid dying—to go against his nature and forsake sacrificing himself for others—so that we could be together. How can I not risk everything to bring my love back to me? (From Goodreads)

Was it flawless?  No.  Did I devour it?  Yes.

I was about half way to three-quarters of the way through If I Should Die when I had a thought.  This book felt so much like I was reading Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer, minus vampires and teen pregnancy.  There was some unrequited love (which I should have seen coming) and a strange, epic-style battle among a species.  After I noticed this, I couldn't get it out of my head.

The ending also left something to be desired.  My suspicion is that it is being left open for the possibility of future novels.  If not, we have have a problem.  It was very abrupt.  Nothing was really left hanging, but it didn't feel like a conclusion.  I was shocked that it just ended.  I expected at least one more chapter to round everything out.

Despite this, I did devour this book.  I got so wrapped up in the story and plight of Kate and Vincent, that I barely put it down.  If you are a fan of the series, I think you'll still enjoy If I Should Die, but beware of the ending.  If you haven't checked out this series, check out my review of Die For Me.

Also, the leather pants reappear.  :)

July Recap (where I just talk about how much I love Jennifer L. Armentrout...)

After no posts for about two weeks, I am back!  School and work just got a little overwhelming there, but both will be done by the end of this week!  Which means that I'm going to get a little bit of a summer!  Madness!

I guess we'll start with some Instagram fun!  This was my July posts in a nutshell.  Follow me @samprestonxo (mostly just so I can follow you guys *insert smiley face here*).

Now on to the good stuff, also known as my lackluster month in reading...

I also did some re-reading of some Jennifer L. Armentrout titles.

Alright, there is a story here.  I was in a not-fantastic mood one day, and decided the best solution was to re-read Wait For You.  I love this story, and read it in one sitting.  I finished, and was scrolling through my Kobo, when I realized I had started re-reading Pure, but never finished.  So I did just that, and ended up progressing through the whole series.  Hurry up, Sentinal!

As far as music goes, three songs have been on repeat for me.  I hope y'all like country!
--- Crash My Party by Luke Bryan
--- Sure Be Cool If You Did by Blake Shelton
--- Listen by Chad Brownlee

And the two books I'm DYING to read in August...

And, finally, my favourite read in July was FRIGID by J.Lynn.  Just go read some Jennifer L. Armentrout/J. Lynn everyone.

Happy August!
