Road Trip Wednesday: School Reading

It's Road Trip Wednesday, a "Blog Carnival" hosted by the lovely ladies over at YA Highway.  They pose a weekly reading/writing question, and through the comments, you can explore and find out everyone's take on the topic.

What's your favourite book you had to read for class?

I've told this story a couple times, but I managed to get through high school only reading four of the books they wanted me to.  In my defense, I read bits and pieces of everything.  I love reading, but hate being forced to read something.

I consider it a good sign that I really did love those four books I read, making this a hard choice between Romeo and Juliet, Lord of the Flies, 1984, or Anna Karenina.  I also read all of Hamlet, but I don't count it, seeing as I thought Rosencrantz survived the whole ordeal until about 3 minutes before my exam.  Apparently I didn't understand what I read.  Anyway, the winner is...

As much as I love a good tale of star crossed lovers, 1984 really inspired my love for dystopian novels.  Not only did Orwell inspire my imagination as to what the world could be, I feel that may also be the case for many authors today.  Themes from Orwell's novel can be seen in our everyday lives, creating a strong connection between book and reader.  Not only did I enjoy it when I read it in Grade 10, but I would gladly read 1984 again.

What was your favourite book you read in school?  Can anyone beat my record for slacking off in English class?

Much love, Samantha

  1. Ahh I really want to read Lord of the Flies. I swear I missed all the 'classics' at school. I recently bought 1984 so am really looking forward to reading that one!

  2. Wow. Only four? That's impressive.

Love "1984." Have you read "Brave New World?" We had to read both one year, and it was really interesting to compare them to each other.

  3. I read a lot of the same books. Out of your list I liked Anna Karenina best.

  4. I have 1984 and have yet to read it. Nice pick though, I read Anna Karenina in high school, but was not a HUGe fan. Romeo and Juliet was a fave in my early teens, I watched every film version after I read it.

  5. I never read 1984 in high school because that wasn't the type of book they would have given us to read at my high school. It was actually the first book I paid for and downloaded onto my kindle when I bought it, that and a Brave New World. Both are up there as my favorites! Good choice!

  6. I love 1984. I read it on my own for the first time this summer. It really does set the stage for so many dystopian novels. I also fully understand what you are saying about not wanting to be told what to read. For me it is about the deadline and being so worried about finishing a book but not enjoying it.

  8. I love '1984' but... gah, it's so depressing. I have to plan some buffer time when I read it, because I'm all mopey for a day or two afterwards.

  9. I have GOT to read 1984. I don't know how I've gotten this far in life without ever reading it. I tried to make myself read Anna Karenina and just couldn't do it!

  10. I would like to say I read this one, but to be honest...not quite sure. But I observe my students read it, and I am always curious. Might just have to pick it up!
